Story of Muthappan

Image
Sree Muthappan is believed to be the personification of two divine figures - Thiruvappana and Vellatom . The dual divine figures Thiruvappana and Vellatom are similar to those of the Theyyamkaliyattem of the Northern Malabar region . Though Sree Muthappan is worshiped as a single deity, it actually represents an integrated or unified form of two Gods, namely Vishnu (with a fish-shaped crown) and Shiva (with a crescent-shaped crown). Sri Muthappan' s Theyyams are performed year-round whereas other Theyyams are seasonal (from October to May) The Naduvazhi (landlord) Ayyankara Illath Vazhunnavar (a Nambudiri Brahmin) was unhappy, as he had no child. His wife Padikutty Antharjanam was a devotee of Lord Shiva . She made a sacrifice to Shiva for children. One day in her dream she saw the Lord. The very next day, while she was returning after a bath from a near by river, she saw a pretty child lying on a flower bed. She took the child home and she and her husband

MUTHAPPA CHARITHAM

Sree Muthappan   is a Hindu deity commonly worshiped in North Malabar region of Kerala State, South India . Muthappan and Thiruvappan, are considered to be a manifestation of Shiva and Vishnu , and hence Muthappan wholly represents the idea of Brahman , the unity of God, as expressed in the Vedas. It is said that if you call Him with Bhakti ( Malayalam : à´à´•്à´¤ി ) (devotion), He hears your prayer. Worship of Muthappan is unique, in that it does not follow the Sattvic (Brahminical) form of worship, as in other Hindu temples. The main mode of worship is not via idol worship, but via a ritual enactment of Muthappan, performed daily at the Parassinikadavu temple. Fish is used as an offering to Muthappan, and people of all castes, religions and nationalities are permitted to enter the temple and take part in the worship. . Muthappan is also the principal deity in the ritualistic Theyyam dance ( Muthappan Theyyam ) performed in the famous Parassinikkadavu temple . Th

Parassinikkadavu is noted for the famous Muthappan temple where people go for worshipping Sree Muthappan . This is the only Hindu Temple in Kerala where a Theyyam performance is a daily ritual offering. Tradition has it that for the Annual Festival, Ulsavam, of the Muthappan Temple at Parassinikkadavu to start, a procession led by a female member of the "Thayyil" clan of Thayyil , Kannur begins from the family home and terminates at the main altar of the temple with a 'pooja' (prayer) to the Gods. Parassinkkadavu is also noted for the Parassinikkadavu Snake Park which is committed to the preservation and conservation of snakes . There are about 150 varieties of snakes including the spectacled cobra , King cobra , Russell's viper , Krait and Pit Viper living in the park. A research laboratory to extract venom from snakes is proposed here. The park also has a large collection of non-poisonous snakes including pythons. with the completion

Parassinikkadavu Snake Park Snake Park is a famous landmark in the district of Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu, en route from Kannur to Taliparamba, 2 km from National Highway(NH) 17. Here one gets to see a large genre of snakes and other small animals and there is even a live show, where trained personnel play and 'interact' with a variety of snakes, including cobras and vipers, and seek to quell mythical fears and superstitions about snakes. The Snake Park set up by the Visha Chikista Kendra at Pappinisseri, has been a centre of attraction to both foreign and domestic tourists. This Kendra(center) offers effective treatment for snake bites with almost 100% cure. This is the only place, perhaps where Ayurveda and Allopathy are effectively combined for curing snake bites. The snake park here houses about 150 varieties of snakes including the Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra, Russell's viper, Krait and various pit vipers. There is also a large collection of non

Kadalayi temple History

Image
There is an interesting legend associated with the origin of the temple. It is believed that the idol of Lord Vishnu consecrated here is the very idol worshiped by Sathyabhama, the consort of Lord Krishna at Dwaraka in the Mahabharata Era more than 5,000 years ago. One day it so happened that she failed to notice her husband standing nearby as she was immersed in performing Pooja to the idol. The Lord, furious, kicked the idol off the pedestal. It flew into the nearby sea, when its right hand was broken. Time and tide took the idol to the Kannur sea belt off Dwarka. A fisherman happened to net it. It being a precious catch, he presented it to King Valabhan, the Kolathiri King ruling over the area in that period. The king had constructed a temple, Kadalayi, in a village about 6 km (4 miles) north of Kannur and was on the lookout for an idol to be consecrated there. The astrologers understood the sanctity of the idol and confirmed that the idol, though its hand was broken and thus de

KANNUr- KANNAN'S UR

Image
If Kannur airport becomes a reality, the historic district Kannur can spread its fame across the globe. the land of looms and lores, Kannur is also considered the land of 'Kannan' (Lord Krishna). A combination of the words Kannan and Ur (native Land) gave birth to the place name Kannur, which was pronounced Canannore during the British reign. Believers reach Kadalayi temple from various places to get the blessings of Lord Krishna Afterward, Kannur retained its old name. With the completion of Kannur Airport, Kannan's ur (Krishana's land) will get global acclaim. It is also believed that Kannur derived its name from Kanathur, a small place that is presently situated in Kannur Municipality. A Kavu ( sacred groves) named Kanathur Kavu also led to the origin of Kannur.

Fort St. Angelos Fort St. Angelos is in the west of Kannur town. It was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida, with the permission of the Kolathiris, on a promontory jutting into the Lakshadweep sea. The Dutch captured the fort in 1663 and sold it to the Ali Raja of Kannur in 1772 and in 1790 it came into the possession of the British. The British rebuilt it and made it their most important station in Malabar . This fort is in a fairly good state of preservation, though parts of it have collapsed. A few obsolete guns areseeh at the place. The fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
